Your Personal Brand
Coke vs. Pepsi; Microsoft vs. Apple; Facebook vs. Twitter; Chrysler vs. Ford. Do you recognize these names and why? It is because each of these businesses are spending billions of dollars to advertise, build, grow and defend their brands each year. You might not have billions of dollars, but you should be just as diligent about your brand as they are with theirs. Why? Because employers receive hundreds of resumes each day and yours will either stand out, or it will look exactly like all of the others in the pile. Think about it this way, either you are building your personal brand……or somebody else is!
Building a personal brand takes time and effort, but in the long-run, it is worth it. The need for a personal branding will continue to increase and future promotions, raises and jobs will be determined by the choices you make when building your very own “personal brand”. Your brand is the one thing that nobody can take away and it will follow you throughout your career. It tells people who you are, what you believe in and what you value.
Clean Up Your Image – pt. 1
The first step, when looking for a forklift driver or warehouse job, is to review your social media and remove anything that you would not want a potential employer to see. Employers are pretty honest about the fact that they are doing background checks and looking at social media. They do this because they want to learn about your personality, your family and your friends. You should also remove any “party pics” and negative posts about former employers and jobs. Don’t forget to look at the photos and posts you are “tagged” in because your friends might not be as diligent about protecting your personal brand as you are. (Most of them will understand why you want certain photos or posts taken down after you explain that you are looking for a job and wouldn’t want a potential employer to see them).

The second step, when looking for forklift driver jobs, is to make sure that your email address represents your personal brand. This is important because, whether you realize it or not, your email address brands you. Think about it this way, would you be more inclined to hire “Joseph.Somebody@gmail.com” or “email@example.com”? That really cool, quirky nickname that impresses all of your “out of work” buddies, can be the difference between your resume ending up in some recycle bin or getting into the hands of a real, live person. As a hiring manager, there were hundreds of times when an applicant was eliminated from consideration simply because of an unprofessional email address. I would recommend creating a new, job-search only email. This not only eliminates the possibility that your email address is holding you back, it will also help you to keep all of your job-search information in one place.

Last, but certainly not least, what will a potential employer hear when they call your cell phone number? What would you do if you called someone for an interview and heard a greeting like this, “If I don’t know you, leave me alone. If I do know you text me because I probably won’t listen to this voicemail”? I would strongly suggest, if you have not done so already, that you call yourself from another phone and listen to your voice mail greeting. Thousands of people will miss out on jobs because of this one very small detail.
